Cauthen Collaborative

Hi! I'm Jody Cauthen, and I teach emerging grant writers how to write grants, source and vet grant opportunities for their non-profit clients, and how to earn money as a freelance grant writer through their newly created network of over 1.8 million US based non-profit organizations.
My inaugural course is entitled "GrantCraft", and it is the gateway to more
financial freedom and a flexible work schedule.

How It All Came to Be...

Hi it's me...Jody Cauthen!

I’ve spent over 17 years teaching grant writing and nonprofit management at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where I also created and launched the Bachelor of Arts degree in Arts Administration.
In addition to my academic work, I’ve also served as a funding and development specialist for organizations focused on performing arts, economic development, entrepreneurial endeavors, and social justice. These experiences gave me hands-on insight into the critical need for skilled grant writers across various sectors.

After losing my job as the top Development Officer at a regional live theatre due to the pandemic, I started my side hustle grant writing business, Cauthen Collaborative. Many non-profit organizations in my community needed help. There were meaning grant relief programs for all sorts of worthy non-profit organizations, but the grantmaking process/application process was daunting and overwhelming for many overworked and underpaid non-profit executive directors.
What I quickly realized was this---many small non-profits were desperate for qualified grant writers to help them fund their missions and the important services they offer communities.

I loved working with different organizations, and I quickly recognized the need for non-profit organizations to have access to qualified and trained grant writers. Which then got me thinking about the opportunity to train grant writers and help them start their own grant writing and resource businesses.

That’s why I created GrantCraft —the inaugural grant writing course of Cauthen Collaborative. With GrantCraft, emerging writers can access the templates, resources, and tools needed to start a grant writing business and build a portfolio that leads to financial freedom and flexible work schedules.
I want to help people, especially those who face barriers to traditional employment, create a side hustle or full-time career in grant writing, without the steep costs or time commitment of degree programs.

I created GrantCraft because I know what it’s like to struggle with finances. As a single parent, I’ve had my share of tight months! That’s why I’m passionate about grant writing as a flexible, rewarding career—one that allows you to earn money on your terms while working with causes that matter.

GrantCraft is designed to give you the tools to get started quickly and confidently on your grant writing journey, so you can turn your skills and passion into a thriving business.

Moreover, enhancing your grant writing abilities can open doors for promotions, leadership roles, or even new career paths within the non-profit sector. Absolutely! Think of GrantCraft as an investment in your future. The skills you’ll acquire can lead to significant supplemental income or even a full-time career. When you weigh the potential earnings against the cost of the course, it’s a smart move towards achieving financial freedom and flexibility.

5. What if I struggle to keep up with the course material?

We’ve got your back! The course is designed to be flexible and self-paced, allowing you to learn at your own speed. Plus, I provide resources and support to help you overcome any challenges you might face.

6. How do I know I’ll feel confident enough to start approaching potential clients?

By the end of GrantCraft, you’ll not only have a solid understanding of grant writing but also practical experience through exercises and examples that mirror real-world scenarios. You'll build your portfolio as you go, which will boost your confidence and prepare you for those “first contact” opportunities in building your brand and network of clients.

7. Can I really make a decent income from grant writing?

Definitely! Many grant writers earn a substantial income, and the demand for skilled grant writers continues to grow, especially with non-profits relying heavily on funding to serve their communities. With the skills learned in GrantCraft, you’ll be well-positioned to tap into this lucrative market.

8. So, exactly HOW MUCH money can I expect to earn after GrantCraft?

Okay, okay, I can see that you are a serious person who needs me to speak from experience and integrity. I recommend that emerging grant writers charge a flat fee for grants they are commissioned to write. I recommend $300-$3000 per grant. Yes, I know, that is quite a variance. However, some grantors’ application processes may include 3 questions that require a narrative response and two supplemental/support documents (this would be more on the $300 fee of the scale), and other grantors may require 30 questions that require narrative responses between 1000-4000 characters each as well as 7-15 supplemental and support documents (this is more on the $3000 end of the fees scale).

That said (written), there are emerging freelance grant writers on UpWork.com charging $20-$50 an hour. Again, I don’t recommend charging by the hour because that does not allow for your gained experience and efficiency (after you write 10 grants, you’ll be much faster). Look at it this way, if the first grant you write requires 5 narrative writing responses and you charge $50 an hour and it takes you 10 hours, then you charge the client $500. Six months later, you have a new client and their grant has 5 narrative questions, and now it takes you 5 hours because you have gained confidence, skilled practice and efficiency. So, at $50 an hour, you would now charge client #2 @ $250. As you grow and improve you should be compensated for your skills, not penalized.
Of course, you could always increase the hourly rate, but my recommendation is a flat rate. It provides both parties with more transparency and continuity in understanding the agreed upon contract and cost. A flat rate also typically requires some sort of immediate deposit when you sign the contract, so it gets you $$$ faster.

9. What if I’m not tech-savvy?

No problem! GrantCraft is user-friendly and designed for everyone, regardless of your tech skills. l walk you through the necessary tools and platforms, ensuring you feel comfortable every step of the way. You’ll be a tech-savvy grant writer in no time! There is also the opportunity to communicate with the course director who can provide tech assistance if needed.

10. What if I don’t have time to commit to the course?

GrantCraft is designed with your busy schedule in mind. You can access the material anytime, anywhere, allowing you to learn in short bursts that fit your life. Even just a few hours a week can lead to significant progress!

11. Will I have access to support after completing the course?

Absolutely! Once you’re a GrantCraft graduate, you’ll join our alumni community where you can continue to connect with fellow grant writers, share experiences, and seek advice. Plus, we keep the lines of communication open, so you can always reach out for guidance.
